Qualifications

I qualified in medicine from Imperial College School of Medicine in 2003 with honours in Physiology and obtaining a BSc (Hons) in Pharmacology and Toxicology.  I spent time working at institutions considered to be at the forefront of respiratory medicine including The London Chest, Royal Brompton and Harefield, St Bartholomew’s, The Royal Free, The Royal London and St Mary’s Hospitals.

In 2011-2016 I was awarded a fellowship to undertake research into the effects of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a smoking-related lung disease, and its treatment on heart structure and function using advanced imaging techniques including cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The work continues to be presented at international conferences.  It has resulted in multiple peer-reviewed publications.  I have also received awards including from the British Lung Foundation. For this work I was awarded a PhD degree from the University of London.

Expertise

In my current NHS post at Northwick Park and Central Middlesex Hospitals, I manage patients with the entire range of breathing and chest conditions. I am currently the Clinical Lead at London North West University Healthcare NHS trust for Oxygen and Sleep Medicine, where I am responsible for analysing and reporting over 500 sleep studies annually.  Between 2017-2021 I was honoured to have been selected to be part of the NICE guideline development committee for sleep apnoea.  We have now published the related NICE guideline for sleep apnoea.

As a Consultant Respiratory Physician,  I am consulted about all symptoms related to the lungs including cough, breathlessness, wheezing, sputum, coughing up blood, chest pains and snoring.  I treats patients with persistent  asthma, chronic bronchitis and emphysema, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), sleep apnoea, long COVID, lung cancer, pulmonary fibrosis, chest infections, pneumonia, tuberculosis (TB), bronchiectasis, pulmonary nodules, pleural disease, pleural effusions, pulmonary embolism, sarcoidosis and pneumothorax.

Experience

I am an experienced bronchoscopist including standard and endobronchial ultrasound guided (EBUS) biopsies and undertake respiratory fitness to fly testing and cardio-pulmonary exercise testing.

I have extensive experience of acute, general and emergency medicine. My clinical responsibilities include the medical High Dependency Unit (HDU), which involves the supervision of patients requiring ventilatory support for both COVID-related illness and other causes of ventilatory failure.  I am involved in the acute on-call rota at Northwick Park admitting up to 50 emergencies per day. I am a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and a member of the British Thoracic Society and European Respiratory Society.
